Root for the Earth! Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

April 16, 2019

The Goddard School of Weston is participating in the Goddard’s Root for the Earth Campaign all during the month of April, 2019. Root for the Earth helps to promote environmental awareness in our community. This campaign, relevant to today’s families, will take place from April 1 through April 22 (Earth Day), and will focus on educating children on the impact single-use plastics have on the environment and provide tools to empower families to make a difference.

The children will participate in hands-on learning activities including planting in our gardens, recycled fashion runways, a sink or float recycling experiment, using single-use plastics to make traffic signs and more! Parent, Phoebe Beierle, talked with the pre-school classes all about Reducing, Reusing and Recycling. Students learned about why the 3 R's are important, what can and can't be recycled, what materials are made from recycled products (bicyles come from aluminum cans and fleece jackets and backpacks come from plastic bottles!!), and simple ways they can reduce their own waste.

Students completed an Upcycling Challenge which inspires children and teachers to stretch their imaginations and use unwanted recycled materials to create something entirely new. We used our collected single-use plastics to create the project. All our classrooms worked together to participate in this challenge!

On Monday, April 22 at 10:00 AM we will also be participating in a “Lights Out!” challenge. We will participate by turning off all non-essential lighting for one hour.
