Utilizing Arc to Engage Students in Authentic Data Analysis

October 30, 2017

Over the course of October and November of 2017 students at Whitefish High School and Whitefish Middle School will be collecting data and analyzing data using the Arc. Examples of data collection include measuring waste, composting, and recycling. Conducting waste audits to identify the proportion of waste that could be diverted from the landfill. Data collection also occurred on the part of students as they completed surveys regarding personal transportation to school and their outlook regarding environmental satisfaction. Students in 7th grade biological science and AP statistics have reviewed the data and developed behavioral strategies to improve the use of resources in key areas. As students collect, analyze, evaluate, and form behavioral recommendations regarding next steps with sustainability programming at the school they are constructing meaning associated with sustainability. Additionally they are assuming ownership of the data and the behavioral initiatives that are emerging from their review and analysis.
