Student Made Sustainability Films - Educate and Inspire

August 31, 2018

The sustainability culture in the Whitefish School District has been growing in the past few years with recycling and composting programs, a newly built community sustainability center, and greenhouse. My students will be working this year to educate their fellow students on the importance of these programs by creating short educational videos. The videos will educate students and staff on the recycling and composting programs in order to encourage increased participation and awareness on what waste goes into compost, recycling, and landfill bins. Throughout the year, students will as well be filming classes at the sustainability center and community greenhouse to educate the school and broader community on the importance of sustainability and regenerative environmental practices.
Our school owns a camera, but we are asking for the accessories needed for student filming and protection for the equipment. These videos will benefit the entire school district as well as community members who use the center and the video equipment creates fun, project-based educational opportunities for current and future students. Project-based lessons that are linked to standards, like composting and cycling of matter, help students fully grasp and connect content with the real world. These videos will do just that- by connecting sustainability, recycling, and composting with content throughout the year, my students will see and demonstrate firsthand what they learn and how it directly affects their world.
