Jefferson Garden Certifications

June 11, 2018

This certification project is an ongoing project of the preexisting garden structure located behind the school. This garden contains several features including, a main edible garden, a pollinator garden, a bug house, and a compost bin. The overall goal for students is to be more involved in their community through harvesting edible vegetables to be donated to the Arlington Food Assistance Center.

Improved environmental & sustainability literacy

More impact of project

The goal is for the garden to gain certification through two different environmental organizations (National Wildlife Federation Wildlife Habitat certification and Audubon At Home Wildlife). These will allow the garden to be a suitable habitat for native species. This goes along with the protection of native species and discouragement of invasive species as a part of the Virginia Standards of Learning through Life Science standard LS.11 which directly deals with the human impacts on the natural environment.
