Growing Valencia

May 08, 2019

Valencia Newcomer School is a very unique inner city school in Phoenix, Arizona, a member of the Alhambra Elementary School District. We are one of a few in the country that exclusively serve our local immigrant/refugee population. Our garden is in the beginning stages of development. We have space on campus that we are able to grow in the ground. Join us on Wednesday May 8th between 9:30-11am for our Hometown Huddle Green Apple Day of Service, as we plan to build a raised garden bed system that covers the west end of our school grounds with the support of Arizona Cardinals, Valley of the Sun United Way, Walmart, and others.
Valencia students currently spend between 2-5 hours a week on garden theory in class in various ways. The garden theory is embedded into the class curriculum. They learn about the garden in their reading, writing and English language development. The children study about the garden in their Social and Emotional Learning class that is offered. They are currently learning to compost, grow vegetables and herbs, and planted a citrus tree.
This Hometown Huddle Green Apple Day of Service Project is providing an irrigation system (students have been watering by hand for 7 months) and raised garden beds. We are so thankful for our community support! #growingvalencia
