Growing, Planting, and Learning

"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." ~W.B. Yeats.

The students I work with love learning and are always wanting to do more hands-on activities. They love doing projects and when they get to help plan, it's that much more exciting. We do investigations, explore new areas on field trips and learn about things beyond the regular classroom curriculum.

My students keep me on my toes and remind me that school needs to be fun, in order for them to focus on their studies and to understand the value of an education. Their neighborhood has declined in recent years and many go home to places where there are issues that would make a lot of adults have difficulty focusing.

They want to learn, but sometimes it is difficult to focus. Even though there are many students who lack support at home, they are given the boost they need by their teachers. With this boost, they become excited to learn, care about their education, and strive to do their best.

Our fifth grade Go Green Challenge team has been learning about ways to conserve energy and resources. Coming soon they will be learning about sustainable food sources and gardening.

This project will help our Green Team learn about hydroponics, plant life cycles, and gardening as they plant succulents, grow herbs and veggies in the hydroponics units, and go outside to explore the school’s garden area using the magnifying glasses.

There is no better way to learn about sustainable food sources and gardening than using a hands-on interactive way. The students will love investigating and exploring while working with each other outdoors and in the classroom.
