Green School Recertification 2017 - 2018

June 11, 2018

Sligo did not have a typical project however the overall project was submitted in hopes of gaining a Montgomery Green School status. Each grade level in the school had a specialized curriculum that was implemented to educate and allow students to gain hands-on experience in environmental awareness and responsibility. The Kindergarten team improved the Courtyard used by Kindergarteners. The First Graders learned about plants. Second Graders planted and harvested carrots. Third Graders learned about ideal conditions for red worms and composting. Fourth Graders participated in the annual field trip to the Anacostia Watershed. Fifth Graders helped out with gardening and planting fruits.

More impact of project

The intention and goal was for the school to make a widespread effort to conserve energy. Especially by emphasizing to turn off lights when rooms are not in use. Waste reduction efforts were also lead by the 5th grade Green Squad where they were tasked with educating the community on how to properly recycle. Students will also plant and tend to native plants and trees to further habitat restoration.
