Glebe Goes Green

June 11, 2018

Glebe School was interested in reducing the amount of waste produced at the school. In order to do this, they put forward an awareness campaign on various strategies to reduce waste. This effort culminated in a waste audit event which was designed to highlight the impact that could be made through improving waste habits. The Green Team at the school collected a day?s worth of trash from the first level of the building, excluding the cafeteria, and had six 35 gallon trash bags. Three of those bags were trash and three were recycling. Further, all bags were laid out for sorting to analyze the waste more closely. It was found that with recycling, only 14% of waste was being disposed improperly. However, on the trash side, only 60% of material was a combination of food and non-recyclables. The Green Team has noted that this aspect can be significantly improved upon.
