Cross Keys Middle School 2017-18 Green Schools Quest

March 11, 2018

The purpose of our composting project is to establish a composting program that will all us to supplement our outdoor classroom garden beds with nutrients needs to grow organic plants. This project will benefit our school in a few different ways. Our students will learn how conservation and composting can improve the health of our school vegetable and habitat gardens. Our students will witness the rapid breakdown of food scraps and complete research and conducting experiments to compare that rate of break down to say aluminum, plastic and/or even paper. As an added benefit, our students can reap what they sow. We plan to incorporate some of the harvest in consumer science classes, and maybe even the cafeteria one day, In consumer Science Classes, students can prepare dishes with the crops that were grown with our compost. This project is a multidisciplinary project that will allow all students (not just the composting club) opportunities to learn about the world in which they live and the importance of participating in the sustainability initiative and reducing waste.
