Bourbon High School 2017-18 Green Schools Quest

March 11, 2018

Our main goal is to divert as much waste from the landfill as we can. We received a grant that started January 1st to develop a composting program with an emphasis on vermicomposting. We only had the opportunity to start last spring and only collected scraps from our school cafeteria. We would like to expand to include composting of post-consumer waste.
In addition to composting, we would like to begin recycling plastic, cans and glass. Currently, there is no organization in our area who will collect these items, but our students are very interested in recycling more. We also would like to plant a native garden to support pollinators. This project will greatly reduce the amount of waste our school sends to the landfill. This will reduce cost for trash disposal. We also believe that as our students have a hands-on role in sustainability, they will develop practices that they will continue throughout their lives.

Intended impact of project
